I would like to adapt some rendering settings (eg. the fog near and far distance) via code.
Since I did not find anything about that in the documentation I wanted to ask, if this is even possible and if so how?

This sounds like a very good idea. Could you please create a ticket for this feature request on the tracker at https://oneangstrom.atlassian.net? We'll do our best to add it for 0.8.0.
